Donations

Financial

In most instances, money donations are used where the need is the greatest. In addition to the day-to-day operation needs, your generosity helps us spay and neuter, provide medical care, and daily comforts for the animals in our care.

The one exception is medical needs. We occasionally receive an animal that has been injured. The medical and care bills for these animals can escalate very quickly. PCHS has had great success rehabilitating many of these animals through generous donations. These animals will be featured on our Special Needs page. If you would like to help defray the medical bills and upkeep for an animal that needs special care, contact Joy or Dianne to make a contribution for that specific animal.

Items

If you would prefer to donate items that we are in need of please refer to this list, Polk County Humane Society Wish List.

In-Kind

In addition to monetary donations and items, we are always appreciative of services. These include Landscape Care, Professional Banner Printing, Brochure Printing, and Dog Grooming. If there is a service that we do not have listed, but you would like to contribute, please contact us.

Volunteer Opportunities

Shelter Volunteer Needs

Setting Up: Our shelter is opening up in just a few short weeks. We need help getting some heavy work done. The list almost seems endless. It will include setting up kennels, moving items we have had in storage, unpacking, arranging areas, and just about anything else that goes along with setting up a new animal shelter.

Staffing: We will need people to staff the shelter on a daily basis. This can include things such as cleaning, walking, bathing, answering phones, maintaining walking paths, basically, if it needs to be done, we need a volunteer for it.

Grant Writers/Public Relations/Fundraising: This position is one that will require some previous experience or education. In order to keep our doors open, we need funding. If you have experience writing grants and coordinating fundraisers, we would like to talk to you.

PetsMart Adoption Events and Volunteer Needs

Drivers: We have a volunteer position currently available for someone would be available on Saturdays to transport animals from Bolivar to Springfield to participate in an adoption clinic. Requirements: valid driver's license. Our goal is to have several volunteers for this position so that one person is not called upon every Saturday.

Set-Up / Take-Down: There are also volunteer openings for persons who would be able to help us set up for the adoption clinics. This would include setting up crates, tables, and moving the animals from the van to the crates. This position has some physical requirements. It requires that you be able to lift at 25 to 30 pounds, as well be able to easily get in and out of the vans. It takes about an hour to set up and an hour to tear down. We normally set up at 9:30 am and tear down at 4:30 pm.

Dog Walkers / Caretakers: An eight hour day at PetsMart is too long to be left in a crate. Our dogs need to be taken out of the crates and taken for short walks near PetsMart so that they can do their business and release a little bit of energy. Also, the water bowls need to be refilled, treats given, and just some positive attention is always appreciated by the animals.

General Assistance: We have volunteer positions available for someone who is people and animal friendly. During the day a lot of people come through our PetsMart Adoption Clinic who have questions about the animals, Polk County Humane Society, or just generally want to chat. We need someone who can think on their feet and answer some of these questions from the general public.

PetsMart Adoption Clinic volunteer positions are almost always on Saturday only. Any of these volunteer positions can be combined.
